Ethiopia: First Mobile Calibration Service Inaugurated

A new Mobile Calibration Service carried on two trucks that will do quality and standard checks on products was inaugurated for the first time in the country of Ethiopia. The trucks, which are worth 2.5 million birr each, are believed to be instrumental in improving quality measurement standards in various industries, laboratories and market places.

During the introduction of one of the trucks, Tadesse Haile, state minister of Trade and Industry highlighted the benefits of having the trucks in the country's efforts to ensure the quality of products.

"The new mobile calibration service can save money and time by getting the calibration services in their own premises, which will help the companies to get efficient delivery of calibration services and maintain their standard performance," Tadesse said.

The State Minister pointed out that the new mobile calibration service was the first of its kind to our country and not commonly found in many African countries.

He added that the service would certainly contribute to the economic and social development of the country, especially at this stage when "Ethiopia's Mass and Temperature Calibration and its Micro-biology laboratory have been accredited by an internationally recognized body." The trucks offer calibration services of mass, Temperature, Length, pressure and electrical energy enabling local enterprises improve their performance, produce goods of higher quality and become competitive in international markets.

The service giving trucks contain state-of-the-art mobile calibration laboratories, fully air conditioned, equipped with a metrology data logger, autonomous power supply unit and many other special devices.

Before the introduction of the mobile calibration service, companies had to come to Quality Standards Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE).

The Mobile service truck is part of the strategy to improve the quality of measurement standards - known as Metrology - in various industries, laboratories and market places all over the country.

The mobile service was introduced by the Engineering Capacity Building Program (ecbp)- a German-Ethiopian joint program- in collaboration with the Quality Standards Authority of Ethiopia (QSAE).
