Pittcon 2007’s Technical Program Offerings Pittcon’s Technical Program is packed with a week's worth of Invited Symposia, Workshops, Organized Contributed Sessions, New Product Forums, and Contributed Oral and Poster sessions to provide the world's most comprehensive coverage of the latest developments in the traditional and emerging disciplines of analytical chemistry and applied spectroscopy. New this year, the American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry will be co-programming with The Pittsburgh Conference. This will involve several invited symposia and contributed sessions as well as some poster sessions. The Pittsburgh Conference is excited to be able to work more closely with the ACS Analytical Division. The program is both broad in scope and well balanced. Major focus areas of the program include bioanalytical chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, nanotechnology, environmental chemistry, forensic analysis, life science technologies, food analysis, applied molecular spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and chemical separations. In addition, a number of prestigious awards will be presented at Pittcon 2007 including the Pittcon Heritage Award, the Pittsburgh Analytical Chemistry Award, the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award, the Pittsburgh Conference Achievement Award, the Ralph N. Adams Award in Bioanalytical Chemistry, the ACS Analytical Chemistry Award for Young Investigators in Separation Science, the Charles N. Reilley Award, the Young Investigator Award, the Dal Nogare Award, the Williams-Wright Award, the Tomas P. Hirschfeld Award, and the Bomem-Michelson Award. Thermo Fisher Scientific Strengthens Sales Channel and Life Sciences Portfolio With the Addition of Spectronex and Flux Instruments Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced it has acquired SwissAnalytic Group AG, based in Basel, Switzerland. SwissAnalytic Group owns Spectronex AG and Flux Instruments AG, which had combined revenue of approximately $22 million USD in fiscal year 2006. Spectronex is a leading supplier of mass spectrometry, chromatography and surface science instrumentation in Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. As Thermo Fisher Scientific expands its field sales presence in Europe, this acquisition will bring additional direct sales, demonstration capabilities and visibility to customers in these regions. Flux Instruments is a manufacturer of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) pumps and software. Flux brings new technology and design expertise to Thermo Fisher Scientific's current HPLC and LCMS business, which includes the new Thermo Scientific Accela(TM) UHPLC as well as advanced sample extraction and liquid chromatography products gained through the recent acquisition of Cohesive Technologies. Shimadzu USA Manufacturing Celebrates 10 Successful Years Shimadzu USA Manufacturing (SUM), a manufacturing division of Shimadzu Corporation celebrated its 10th anniversary on Friday, December 15, 2006. The factory was established in October 1996, and has been in production since 1997. Located in Canby, Oregon, SUM made its first shipment in January 1998. At the time, it employed 51 people and manufactured eight different products. Currently shipping approximately 750 units per month, the facility supports 96 employees and manufactures 37 different products, including HPLC and GCMS instruments. “We were able to survive and grow because of the dedication of all members of the company and the support of the city of Canby and the state of Oregon,” said Katsuaki Kaito, President of SUM. Shimadzu Announces 2007 Training Schedule Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI) has announced its 2007 training schedule. Courses are available in the areas of environmental analysis, spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and test and measurement. Courses are held at the Customer Training and Education Center (CTEC) at SSI’s Columbia, Md. headquarters. Highly trained instructors employ state-of-the-art, interactive teaching media to facilitate a thorough understanding of both the hardware and application software packages.
